Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment (also known as endodontic therapy) is a routine procedure that can save a damaged or infected tooth and relieve pain. At The Tooth Place, we carry out root canals with care and precision, using modern techniques to make the experience as comfortable as possible.

What is a Root Canal Treatment?

Inside each tooth is a soft tissue called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. If this becomes infected or inflamed due to decay, trauma, or a deep filling, it can cause severe pain or lead to an abscess.

A root canal involves:

- Removing the infected or damaged pulp
- Cleaning and disinfecting the inside of the tooth
- Filling and sealing the space to prevent future infection

This helps preserve the natural tooth structure and avoids the need for extraction.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

1. Numbing the Area – We use local anaesthetic to ensure the tooth and surrounding area are completely numb.
2. Isolating the Tooth – A protective sheet (rubber dam) may be placed to keep the area clean and dry.
3. Cleaning the Root Canals – The dentist will access the inside of the tooth and carefully remove any infection.
4. Shaping and Disinfecting – The canals are cleaned and shaped using specialist tools, then thoroughly disinfected.
5. Filling the Root – The root canals are filled and sealed with a material called gutta-percha.
6. Restoration – The tooth may be restored with a filling or crown to protect it and restore function.

Root canal treatment is typically completed in one or two visits.

What Happens After the Treatment?

Discomfort

Some tenderness or mild discomfort is normal for a few days and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief.

Final Restoration

We often recommend a crown following root canal treatment to protect the tooth long-term, especially for molars.

Follow-Up

Regular check-ups are important to monitor the tooth and ensure long-term success.

Root canal treatment has a high success rate and allows you to keep your natural tooth for many years to come.
