Fillings

What Is a Filling?

A filling is a common restorative dental procedure used to repair a tooth that has been damaged by decay. It helps restore the tooth’s shape, function, and strength while preventing further deterioration.

The process involves removing the decayed portion of the tooth, cleaning the area thoroughly, and placing a filling material to restore the structure.

What to expect at your appointment?

If you’re coming in for a filling, here’s what typically happens:

1. Numbing – The area around the tooth will be gently numbed to keep you comfortable.
2. Isolation – A small rubber dam may be placed to keep the area dry and protected.
3. Decay Removal – The decayed part of the tooth is carefully removed using specialist tools.
4. Filling Placement – The chosen filling material is placed and shaped to match your natural tooth.
5. Curing (for white fillings) – If a composite (white) filling is used, it’s hardened with a special light.
6. Bite Check – We’ll make sure the filling fits comfortably with your bite.
7. Polishing – The filling is smoothed and polished to feel natural.

Most fillings are quick and straightforward, you will be able to carry on with your day as normal once the numbness wears off.

What to expect

A dental bridge is a fixed dental restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth by spanning the gap between adjacent teeth. It consists of artificial teeth, called pontics, which are anchored to the natural teeth on either side of the gap.

Dental bridges are available privately and help restore the appearance and function of the smile while preventing potential issues associated with missing teeth, such as shifting of adjacent teeth and difficulty in chewing.
